WD-40...Who Knew

Okay…so it isn’t trendy or glamorous. No bling. No sex appeal. Yet, its name has become as recognized as many other icons of American merchandising…”Coke”, “Kleenex”, “Post-It”.  WD-40 is a must-have in every home, garage and vehicle in America…and, because we love trivia, we decided to do a little research into this dynamo.

In 1953, WD-40 was developed by 3 technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company.  The water displacement (get it...W-D?) formula was successfully compounded on the “40th” attempt…thus, “WD-40.”  Used originally to protect missile parts, the list of effective uses has grown to near urban legend.  From the mundane removal of road tar and grime from cars to keeping pigeons off outdoor patios (they don’t like the smell), WD-40 is the gift that keeps on giving. It protects the Statue of Liberty surface…removes all traces of duct tape…keeps shower doors (glass or plastic) spot-free…and, our personal favorite…spraying WD-40 on arm, hand and knee joints relieves arthritis pain.

We have to say it again…who knew?
