The Healing Hands of Time

In the years since September 11, 2001, hundreds of books and images of that day of horror have been published. None captures the enormity of the acts of terrorism, nor the startling magnificence of American heroism and bravery like LIFE Magazine’s One Nation: America Remembers September 11, 2001. For years, the “wound” of that day has been too raw and tender in our memories to consider it “history.” The emotions…whether fear of additional acts, anger at the terrorists, aching sympathy for the families who lost loved ones, or heart-bursting pride for the heroic acts of fellow citizens and rescue workers… have been too vivid and intense to feel the need to relive the day in captured images. 

Now, it is time to share with future generations an accurate “history lesson” of September 11, 2001. LIFE Magazine, for its entire existence, has been known for its vivid portrayal, in words and photographs, of life’s events, both joyous and tragic. This book is no exception. We can’t tell you it is an enjoyable book to read, but it is a dignified tribute to that piece of American history.  

It is time to remember.
