Brain Rules

We don’t usually encourage civil disobedience…but, this time, we want you to break all the rules… with Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School.  See…we aren’t as radical as we sound. Several It’s Good Stuff staffers have shared a common concern regarding their ability (or, lack thereof) to retain information and learn new skills (“Can’t teach an old dog new tricks”). Looking for a remedy, they were referred to Brain Rules which focuses on applying new rules for new brain capacity and neuron firing.

John Medina, the author of this amazing guide offers a dozens principles on how the brain really works so you can access your thinking machine. For example, Medina tells readers that our visual sense trumps all our other senses so we learn more with pictures and graphics. Think about it—do you have a hard time explaining things at home or work? Brain Rules makes the case that visuals help our brains to grasp complex ideas. And, whether you are young or old, your brain can compensate for losing brain cells so you can continue to learn if you know how. So, it busts the myth that you can’t teach old dogs new tricks. The author’s style of writing is engaging and his examples are universal life stories. However, it is based on hard science - what we know and what we don’t know about how the brain works. In fact, it’s one of those books that will make you say, “I could have said that”!

This is a great book to give your boss, your spouse, your staff, and your adult kids - but, read it yourself first!
